2012 News & HighlightsA number of headline subjects dominated TradeTech this year – few presentations or panels could escape the 800lb regulatory gorilla in the room, or the spectres of falling volumes and shrinking margins that were haunting the brokers. Perhaps the most interesting theme of the conference though was not what was being discussed on the stage, but what was being whispered in the exhibition hall and in the bars… a rumour that a single trend that has dominated market dynamics for 10 years may be about to be reversed. The buy side outsource technology. Fact. Right? Perhaps not for much longerIt seems that after years of using systems provided by their brokers, and years of discussions at previous TradeTech events about how such systems rarely met the real needs of the buy side, at least the largest asset managers intend to bring technology infrastructure back in house. How this may impact the brokers, for whom technology has become one of few points of distinction for their increasingly commoditised services, remains to be seen. What is certain is that if the rumours prove true, this is likely to be as hotly discussed on stage at TradeTech 2013 as it was off stage in 2012. Infrastructure, latency and technology innovation How fast is fast enough? – was one of the main questions for several panels. Different ideas of what is coming after latency and how the brokers and buy side are expected to cope with the super fast paced environment of technology developments came up in most discussions and presentations. Exchanges had an opportunity to show their vision for the future, with capacity and volatility forming the main topics for discussion | Over 700 leading buy side institutions attended in 2012 including| Head of Trading | Amplitude Capital | | Head of Trading | Carnegie Asset Management Denmark | | Head of Trading | Cedar Rock Capital | | Head of Trading | Clariden Leu | | Head of Trading | Groupama Asset Management | | Head of Trading | RJS | | Head of Trading | Shell Asset Management | | Head of Trading | Sloane Robinson | | Head of Trading | Ahorro Corporacion Gestion | | Head of Trading | Eurobank EFG Equities | | Head of Trading | NCB Wealth Management | | Head of Trading | Gulf International Bank | | Head of Trading | DP Management Limited | | Head of Trading | Estlander & Partners | | Head of Trading | Credit Suisse Private Banking | | Head of Trading | Systematic Absolute Return AG | | Head of Trading | Systematic Absolute Return AG | | Head of Trading | GIC | | Head of Trading | Legg Mason | | Head of Trading | Alize Trading | | Head of Trading | Ardevora Asset Management | | Head of Trading | Franchise Partners | | Head of Trading | Banque De Luxembourg | | Head of Trading | Impax Asset Management | | Head of Trading | Superfund Asset Management | | Head of Trading | AIB Investment Managers | | Head of Trading | Marshall Wace LLP | | Head of Trading | ERSTE Investment |
